Since 1996, the Crash Bandicoot universe has given us some of the most chaotic, charming, and downright bizarre characters in gaming history. From genetically mutated marsupials to time-traveling mad scientists, everyone has their favorites.
Today, I’m breaking down my personal top 10 characters from the franchise. Let’s dive into the roster!
10. Polar
Kicking off the list is the cute but cool Polar bear cub. First appearing in Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back, Polar gave us those thrilling, fast-paced riding levels where you have to dodge obstacles at breakneck speeds.
9. N. Tropy
The master of time himself. Dr. Nefarious Tropy stands out because of his awesome steampunk aesthetic, his massive tuning fork weapon, and his incredibly smug attitude. He provides some of the best boss battles in the entire series.
8. Crash
Crash is an absolute legend with his signature spin attack, goofy expressions, and chaotic energy. He’s the heart of the franchise, but the wacky cast around him pushes a few others just a bit higher for me.
7. Emperor Velo XXVII
Whether we are talking about his imposing robotic suit or his true, diminutive alien form, Velo from Crash Nitro Kart is a fantastic villain. He brought a sense of grand scale and cosmic stakes to the racing spin-offs, demanding respect.
6. Crunch
Introduced as an antagonist in The Wrath of Cortex, Crunch quickly evolved into a beloved member of the Bandicoot family. He acts as the muscular, tough-guy older brother to Crash and Coco, bringing a hilarious energy to the later games.
5. Coco
Crash’s highly intelligent, tech-savvy younger sister. Coco isn’t just a sidekick; she’s a powerhouse who builds her own gadgets, hacks computers, and drives jet skis. For mainline games, she was only playable in certain types of levels until It’s About Time where she got to shine, being playable just as often as Crash.
4. Papu Papu
The chief of Wumpa Island’s native tribe. Papu Papu is a classic, memorable first boss who just wants to sleep in peace until Crash accidentally wakes him up. His giant club and booming laugh make him an unforgettable part of the original PlayStation trilogy.
3. Pura
While Polar handles the ice, Pura rules the Great Wall of China levels in Crash Bandicoot: Warped. Riding Pura while sprinting away from dragons is platforming perfection. Plus, his tiger cub design is simply too cute to ignore.
2. Penta Penguin
The ultimate sleeper pick. Penta Penguin started out as a minor character in the background of Crash 2 and a hidden racer in CTR. Over the years, he has gained a cult following among fans. He might look innocent, but on the racetrack, he is an absolute speed demon.
1. Dr. Neo Cortex
Dr. Neo Cortex is arguably one of the greatest video game villains. With his oversized head, the giant “N” stamped on his forehead, and his voice acting, Cortex strikes the perfect balance between a genuine threat and a hilarious comedic foil. His dynamic with Crash is legendary, making him the undisputed number one on this list.
