Harry Potter is a beloved series. The fascinating premise of a school for witches and wizards captivated audiences, but the plot and setting would be nothing without the wonderful characters. Narrowing down the cast of characters in the Wizarding World was not easy, but here are my ten favorites.
10. Minerva McGonagall
Stern, sharp, and fiercely protective of her students. Whether she’s handing out biscuits, standing up to Umbridge, or animating the Hogwarts statues to defend the castle, Professor McGonagall is inceedible.
9. Dobby
A lovable house-elf. Dobby gaining his independence and ultimate sacrifice are some of the best and emotional moments in the entire saga.
8. Hermione Granger
The brightest witch of her age, whose intelligence is matched only by her ferocious sense of justice. Hermione has some incredible feats, being a pivotal part of the trio’s survival every year.
7. Draco Malfoy
Draco serves as an interesting antagonist. His journey from an insufferable school bully to a deeply conflicted teenager breaking under the weight of his family’s expectations is hauntingly human.
6. Voldemort
An iconic villain. The story does a great job at building up his threat and having the connection between him and Harry was a great plot point. Tom Riddle’s terrifying descent into dark magic serves as the ultimate warning against the path of fear and pride.
5. Severus Snape
A layered character and perhaps the most interesting in the story. At first he is easy to dislike, serving as an obstacle to Harry at every turn. Learning about his backstory and true loyalty was a great reveal and shining a different light on him.
4. Albus Dumbledore
Brilliant and enigmatic, Dumbledore carries the burden of the greater good while being a guide to the young wizards of Hogwarts. He is a charming and intriguing character.
3. Rubeus Hagrid
The half-giant with a giant heart. Hagrid provides the first true safe haven Harry ever knows and introduces interesting creatures. His kind heart and loyalty make him a fan-favorite.
2. Harry Potter
A great protaganist. “The Boy Who Lived” could have easily been a generic chosen-one archetype, but his resilience and profound capacity for love despite his trauma make him endlessly compelling.
1. Ron Weasley
Loyal to a fault, Ron is the grounded anchor of the main trio. He faces his fears to stand by Harry every step of the way.
