Star Wars is an iconic franchise and one of my favorites. From the three trilogies to the standalone films, there are many exciting adventures. However, there is a definite difference in my enjoyment across them. After much deliberation, here are my personal top 10. I’ll also be giving a star rating (out of 5) to each.
1. Return of the Jedi (5 Stars)
Return of the Jedi is the culmination of everything I love about Star Wars. The emotional payoff of Luke confronting Vader and the Emperor, the fight to rescue Han from Jabba the Hutt, the epic space battle over Endor, and the joy of seeing our heroes celebrate their victory – it’s a cinematic masterpiece. It delivers on every promise made by its predecessors and leaves you with a profound sense of hope and satisfaction.
2. The Empire Strikes Back (5 Stars)
While widely regarded as the best of the franchise, Return of the Jedi just barely beats it out for me. The Empire Strikes Back takes what was set up in A New Hope and delivers, exceeding all expectations. It has so many new locations: the ice planet Hoth, the swamp planet Dagobah, and Cloud City. It introduces new characters like Yoda and escalates the stakes. It also has perhaps the most iconic movie twists of all time.
3. A New Hope (5 Stars)
The one that started it all. A New Hope is a groundbreaking film that introduced us to a galaxy brimming with adventure and unforgettable characters. It is truly a captivating film. The visual effects were hugely impressive at the time and still look great today. Practically everything from the movie is iconic and it has inspired imagination in countless fans.
4. Revenge of the Sith (5 Stars)
Revenge of the Sith is an amazing movie, and everything the prequel trilogy was building towards. It’s filled with incredible moments. The thrilling spaceship dogfight in the opening to the film, the epic battles against Count Dooku and General Grievous, the devastating execution of Order 66, and the epic duel between Anakin and Obi-Wan just to name some. We also get to see the fall of the Republic and Darth Sidious in all of his villainous glory. This was a satisfying conclusion to the prequel trilogy.
5. Attack of the Clones (4 Stars)
Attack of the Clones expands the galaxy in fascinating ways. It introduces the clone army and the Separatists. It features some memorable moments, including the Battle of Geonosis. It might be a bit clunky at times and perhaps you can fast-forward through the awkward romance scenes, but it is still a fun time.
6. The Phantom Menace (4 Stars)
It might have its flaws, but it also brings so much to the table. It has Podracing, Darth Maul, Qui-Gon Jinn, and the awe-inspiring Duel of the Fates. Not to mention the memes. It laid the groundwork for the Prequel trilogy.
7. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (4 Stars)
A great standalone film set right before the original trilogy. Rogue One showcases the sacrifice of the Rebellion. Its desperate mission and devastating ending make it a unique and powerful addition to the Star Wars canon.
8. The Force Awakens (3 Stars)
The Force Awakens was a much-needed jolt of energy for the saga, bringing back the classic Star Wars feel while introducing a compelling new generation of heroes and villains. It perfectly blended nostalgia with fresh ideas, leaving us eager to see where the story would go next.
9. The Last Jedi (2 Stars)
This is a divisive one. There are some things I appreciate about it. It takes bold risks. It also has some engaging scenes such as Kylo Ren and Rey teaming up and Luke confronting Kylo Ren. There are a lot of things that I don’t appreciate about it though. Luke’s character was treated terribly by the writers, the B-plot with Finn and Rose was not very interesting, and there are many moments that have spectacle but are a bit nonsensical.
10. The Rise of Skywalker (2 Stars)
Rounding out my list is The Rise of Skywalker. It had a monumental task in concluding the sequel trilogy, but fails to deliver. The plot is contrived, most of the characters are uninteresting, and somehow Palpatine returned.
