The year was 1999. A game arrived that would change fighting games forever: Super Smash Bros. It wasn’t just a fighting game, it was a celebration of Nintendo’s greatest characters, all brawling it out in iconic stages.
Today, I’m taking a trip down memory lane to rank my top 10 favorite characters to play as from that legendary original lineup. Let’s dive in!
1. Kirby

Little, pink, and surprisingly powerful! Kirby was my go-to. His ability to float indefinitely made him incredibly forgiving for a new player, and inhaling opponents to steal their powers is incredibly satisfying.
2. Pikachu

The most iconic Pokemon. Pikachu’s speed and quick attacks made him a blast to play. Thunder Jolt is a great projectile attack and it is always a blast to use the powerful Thunder attack. He is always a joy to play.
3. Yoshi

I’ve always had a soft spot for Yoshi. He’s my go to in Mario Kart and Mario Party. His unique double jump and egg laying made him stand out. It’s fun to gulp up opponents and turn them into eggs.
4. Fox

Fox McCloud is a high speed character. His Reflector was a game-changer against projectile users, and his rapid-fire blaster kept opponents on their toes.
5. Mario

You can’t have a Nintendo fighting game without him! Mario is an all-rounder. Classic fireballs for projectiles and punches and kicks for close quarters. He’s easy to pick up and fun to master.
6. Luigi

One of the three unlockable characters. Luigi was a bit floatier than Mario, and had a lot of the same moves as his brother. His powerful Super Jump Punch was incredibly satisfying to land. Luigi always brought a bit of underdog charm to the battlefield.
7. Captain Falcon

Captain Falcon is pure hype and the fastest character in the game. While maybe not the easiest to master, landing a Falcon Punch is exhilarating.
8. Link

The hero of Hyrule brought his iconic arsenal to Smash. Boomerangs and bombs gave him excellent projectile game, while his sword offered decent close-quarters combat.
9. Donkey Kong

Donkey Kong was the heavyweight character of the game and all about power. His Giant Punch could rack up KOs. He was slow but hit like a truck, making him a satisfying character for those who liked to dish out heavy damage.
10. Samus

The bounty hunter from Metroid brought her arm cannon and power suit to the fight. Charging up a massive Charge Shot is always a fun move. Samus offered a unique blend of projectiles and strong physical attacks, making her a formidable opponent.
There you have it – my personal ranking of the original Super Smash Bros. roster! Every character brought something special to the table, and this game truly laid the foundation for one of the greatest fighting series of all time.
