The “platformer mascot” genre has been a bit of a nostalgia trip lately and there are two classic platforming icons who have been orbiting each other’s greatness for decades without ever actually colliding.
I’m talking about Crash Bandicoot and Rayman. These two have been around for decades. Rayman was first released in 1995 on the PS1. Crash Bandicoot followed one year later. While the first Rayman game was a 2D platformer, Rayman 2 made the jump to three dimensions.
Here is why a 3D crossover between Crash and Rayman would be a hit!
The Dynamic Duo of Chaos
Think about the personality match here. You have Crash paired with Rayman. Two funny and chaotic characters.
- The Vibe: Both franchises lean heavily into surrealism, slapstick humor, and vibrant environments.
- The Conflict: Imagine Neo Cortex and André (the Black Lum) or Mr. Dark forming an unholy alliance.
Gameplay: The Best of Both Worlds
A 3D crossover would allow for a brilliant evolution of the platforming genre. We could see a “tag-team” mechanic where levels require the specific strengths of both heroes.
Why Now?
The “Toys for Bob” era of Crash has proven that there is a massive appetite for challenging, high-fidelity 3D platformers. Meanwhile, Rayman has been waiting in the wings for his big 3D comeback. Combining these fanbases would be a massive win for both Activision and Ubisoft.
