The Super Mario Galaxy games are some of my favorite games of all time, and with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie coming this year, it’s the perfect time to talk about them. The sheer variety of galaxies across both games is massive. That variety also applies to the bosses. From robots, to alien octopi, I’ll be counting down my top 10 favorite bosses across both games. Perhaps some of them might appear in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
10. Gobblegut (Bowser Jr.’s Fiery Flotilla)

Gobblegut is a massive dragon that weaves in and out of the planet’s surface. The scale of this fight is immense. Targeting his glowing belly aches while he eats the ground beneath your feet is an adrenaline rush.
9. Rollodillo (Boulder Bowl Galaxy)

This armored beast rolls at you with terrifying speed, and the only way to win is to bait him into a miss and strike his exposed backside with your own rock roll attack. It’s a fun fight with a great use of the Rock Mushroom.
8. Dino Piranha (Good Egg Galaxy)

The first boss of Super Mario Galaxy! Breaking the shell of that giant egg only to have a massive prehistoric piranha plant monster chase you around a tiny planetoid is the perfect first boss encounter.
7. Kamella (Space Junk / Deep Dark Galaxy)

Kamella is a Magikoopa that uses magic attacks. Whether she’s on her ship or in the depths of a cave, her fight is a color-coded test of reflexes.
6. Prince Pikante (Shiverburn Galaxy)

The son of a later boss on this list. He drives a giant chariot loaded with coconut cannons. It’s a chaotic and high-speed fight, and the fact that the arena is covered in ice adds another layer of excitement.
5. King Lakitu (Yoshi Star Galaxy)

The classic Mario trend of taking an enemy, supersizing them, and giving them a crown. In Super Mario Galaxy 2, it’s the Lakitu that gets this treatment. This fight requires precision. You have to wait for him to throw a Spiny, then use Yoshi to tongue-flick it back up into his cloud. It’s a great use of Yoshi in a boss fight.
4. King Kaliente (Good Egg Galaxy)

The first time you see Kaliente emerge from the lava, you know you’re in for a treat. His fight is a classic game of tennis. You have to send his coconuts back at him while dodging fireballs.
3. Megahammer (Bowser Jr.’s Fearsome Fleet)

One of the highlights of Galaxy 2, Megahammer is a mechanical behemoth. This fight is all about Yoshi. Catching Bullet Bills in Yoshi’s mouth and spitting them back at those glowing power cores feels powerful and frantic in all the right ways. It’s nice to have Bowser Jr. be a threat.
2. Major Burrows (Gusty Garden Galaxy)

Gusty Garden is famous for its music, but Major Burrows is another highlight. This massive Monty Mole forces you to use the Ground Poundto pop him out of the dirt at just the right time and then chase him down. It’s fast-paced and makes perfect use of the arena. Maybe in the next game we could see a General Burrows?
1. Bouldergeist (Ghostly Galaxy)

From Galaxy 1, Bouldergeist is a menacing threat. The atmosphere, the difficulty, and the mechanics of the fight are all excellent. The way you have to use Bomb Boos to chip away at his stone exterior is incredibly satisfying.
Which of these galactic encounters was your favorite?
